Gripes and grumps

Postby dlema » Thu Mar 20, 2008 12:03 pm

Another revival.
Misuse of the English language - whatever happened to adverbs?
You know these words that end in 'ly'.
Twice within minutes during the Scotland/Italy game on Saturday, one commentator said "....he fell awkward", then someone else said "....he had to do that quick"
Later on the same day on the radio announcer said "let us know which causes you think deserves........"

Did these people get any grammar lessons at all, or is this another casualty of the interminable tinkering with the education syllabus?

It all starts at primary level with teachers who have not had the basics of grammar, the media which seems to have discarded any they may have had, and parents who go along with the general rule that children must not have their "self esteem" dented in any way. Listening to the radio news these days is similar to the old English lessons we used to have where we were instructed to correct the grammatical errors. Must be very difficult for those who do not have English as their first language to follow what is going on.

The one that Irks me most is the gradual eliminiation of the adjectival form of "fun" most of the media say things like "He is a fun person"
I think this started with the hi-jacking of words like "gay" meaning happy in a light hearted way.

Oh, yummee yum... the Gripes are back. Wish you'd given me advance warning, though... can't think of anything to moan about at such short notice. I'll work on it...

I could moan about you not having anything to moan about, but perhaps that would a trifle unfair. You will let me know eventually.

Och, it's time I had a good mump. A glorious day yesterday (Wed), was hoping to go home around 0100 to do some outdoor work. Waited in from 0800 to 1709 for the carrier to call, to uplift a duplicate order. Needless to say, naebody arrived. Well, they've had their chips - they'll jest have to take pot luck as I'm offski right now (12.29 by the time my PC closes down.)

Carriers only think about one person, themself. It annoys me significantly when telephoned by them to inform me that the delivery will be on such a day, but they cannot even say if it will be in the morning or afternoon. They expect me to stay at home, if working take a day off work, because of their incompetance or lack of planning! They must be having a laugh!

As I remarked before Laird, it is the gentlemen who are the gossips.
