Does anyone here remember Kipperfeet? She/he was an extremely mannish woman with black hair, black horn-rimmed glasses and a moustache. She wore military strength tweeds and here feet were huge. She only ever appeared in the girls' playground.

Remember her very well indeed. She was an excellent teacher and instilled in me a lifetime passion for history. One of kind and very interesting to talk to as long as you did not stand too close!

Her name was Connie Stewart, and she lived near me in a bungalow on the Kingsway, close to Strathmartine Road. Her only concessions to women's clothing were a skirt and stockings for school - at all other times she wore men's trousers, and she smoked like a chimney. When I came back to Dundee after Uni to do teacher training, she was teaching at Stobbie Girls'. I hope she wasn't pushed out of the Morgan because of her sexual orientation.

I agree with you Kate. We were always most respectful to Miss Stewart and I hope that she was not pushed out. There are teachers who do make a huge difference to their pupils, for the right reasons, and she was one of them.

When you saw her in town on a Saturday wearing her sports jacket and flannels with brogues shoes to match, one thought, how peculiar.
As a youngster, I overheard, as one does, adult conversation saying to the effect she was queer. In all innocence, I took that to mean "penny aff the shullin". We didn't know of sexual orientation in women at that time.

There were a lot of "strange" women teachers at Morgan, or so it would seem, to my innocent eyes. Don't recall Kipperfeet, but then I'm just a youngster! What decade (decades) was she a teacher? (That's not a silly question. My mother, b 1916, was taught by Miss McDougall as was my sister, b 1944!)

Would reckon the 40's and certainly the early 50's.
I also had Miss MacDougall (Cherry-nose) As I remember she was Catherine.

I'm sure Ms Stewart was still at Morgan when I arrived in 1957.

I agree Dave, but 57-58 may have been her last year at Morgan

I recall a very human moment between Miss Stewart and the rector Peter Robertson around 1950. The rector had been visiting her classroom as lunch time arrived and he began exiting the classroom at the same time as a boy called Peter Smith. Kipperfeet summoned Peter Smith back about something and called out "Peter". The rector wheeled around with a frown on his face assuming she had had the audacity to use his first name. As soon as Miss Stewart explained that it was Peter Smith she had called, the frown on the rector's face quickly changed and they both smiled as they shared this humourous moment. I remember them both with fondness.

Thank you biloxi for identifying your credentials as an FP! Thanks to a nasty incident on the previous forum, we are a bit suspicious of newcomers who register and then don't post. I'm sure Eric, Margaret, Ian and Ernie may be able to put two and to together and come up with your name.
Before I get wheached for not sticking to the subject . . .
WOW, you saw Mr Robertson SMILE! That must have be an interesting sight.

I used 'biloxi' as my user name for want of anything else. I used to live in Biloxi, Mississippi and thought it was a paradise. After I was employed somewhere else, Hurricane Katrina came and almost flattened the town and it is still recovering. My name is Jim Sullivan and my years are 1948-1953. I am a friend of Richard Young. The teachers I remember most are Miss Stewart, Baldy Baxter, Mr. Gove, Addy Lawson, Mr. Bruce, Miss Mackie, D.B. Smith, Mr. Gow & Peter Robertson with whom I had several run-ins. (maybe more of that later).
