Hullo all Did anyone turn out to see them imploded ?. Saw the television coverage. Very strange looking over from Strathkinness towards Dundee just now.

I didn't actually see it but I heard the bang and what a bang. I was going down Union Street at the time. I was a bit worried about the effect of hundreds of frightened seagulls and pigeons flying around vacating their rear ends.

These blocks were built after I left Dundee, but I remember the protests at the time - "They'll be almost as high as the Law" etc. Right enough, they didn't improve the iconic view of Dundee from across the Tay, and they obviously weren't desirable residences for very long. Probably most folk are saying "Good riddance".

Funnily enough, Kirkcaldy built three multi-storey blocks on a prime site overlooking the Forth and near Ravenscraig Castle. They have always been popular, and as far as I know have had no social problems, although the town has other "problem" areas. I wonder why multi-storey flats are sometimes successful but mostly a disaster.

The galling point about the Dundee multis is they still have not been paid for.

One thing I forgot the DC Thomson photographer was allowed access. They are selling photos taken before the drop. One photo was of the school and the tower taken from an angle that will not happen again unless by use of a helicopter. I agree with Kate good riddance a failed social engineering experiment well gone. The view of Dundee from the South viewing area of the Tay road bridge has improved greatly.

Tell me roslin ... Do you know what has happened to all the people who lived in these multis? Knocking down the Towers would not be the end of the problem I suspect. The Towers were the original answer to all the displaced people from the (in)famous TROJAN Hire demolitions of the Ann Street /Hilltown area.
Thanks for the posting. It is real news to some of us afar off.

To cby 1955 et al The people were re-housed in the then new social housing. The only black mark was the increased distance they have to travel to get to the city centre and other parts. The towers were one third empty at closure. The other reason they were chosen to come done is the size of the Dundee population. At peak in 1974/75 excluding student in flats etc it had reached over 220,000 now it is below including students less than 150,000. Low birth rate and dispersal of population to surrounding areas the cause

OOPs! Roslin mean to say DOWN not done on the last post that would have upset the English department ! If anyone has been away for a long time have a look on Google maps at the size of places like Newport and Wormit for instance . They are joined up now. You get a good view of the school tower from parts of Newport. Carnoustie is rather bigger than I remember from my childhood too. The Scots population overall is nearly 200,000 less today than in the seventies which makes the Dundee population drain even more stupid

Newport - Wormit have been "joined-up" for at least 30 years. Tayport has probably grown more in that time

Roslin:
I am looking forward to my visit back to Dundee.
I am wondering what Dundee will look like without the Hilltown multis as I move slowly "oer the Bridge!"
I hope that they have not had a sequel --- Trojan Hire TWO !
Will even get a chance to visit St Andrews -- even St Mary's if it is still allowed to be there.

Hi cby 1955 St. Marys will still be there come in to the janitors office and identify yourself . Give you the tour biggest change is the Bute no longer the medical place. Went over the road bridge on Saturday. Tayside house still there but not the elevated footway to the swimming pool. It is funnny or sad every time us Fifers go to shop in Dundee it seems that another shop has gone for a burton. No pun intended mind that tailors shop fine
