Pitkerro Road Gate

Postby roslin » Wed Oct 12, 2011 8:31 pm

Evening All from a university South Of Dundee. I see there is to be an actual pedestrian crossing close to the gate on Pitkerro road. How did we manage to get across in one piece all these years ago ?.

In my day, the Rector - Mr. Robertson - reminded us of road drill every Monday morning at the weekly assembly. He also read out the list of pedestrian road accidents and their causes - walking out from behind a tram etc. Road safety and disciplined pedestrian habits were taught - and mostly observed - from a very early age and were constantly reinforced.

Rector Peter Robertson also allowed the police to talk to those of us who cycled to school. The police encouraged us to take a 'cycling proficiency test'. They must have provided us with the Highway Code and maybe other information or training, I forget now. Then we took our bikes to be inspected by the police and during the same session, they tested us on a circuit complete with cones and traffic signs. If we and our bikes passed, we were awarded the Cycling Proficiency Certificate. I remember taking my test (successfully!) at a circuit set up in the playground of St. Michael's School on Graeme Street. We regarded having the certrificate as an achievement and took a certain pride in cycling according to the prescribed code.
