... AND he had a way with the girls! Nothing illegal, jest a bit naughty...
I liked Harry, always good for a laugh, unlike Bert Mackay and Bill Malin who were serious types.
One of his portraits, of a pupil named Needler (don't remember her forename) was reproduced, in monochrome of course, in the school magazine around 1958/59. Perhaps someone will have time to check it out, but right now I'm in need of some cheese on toast...

Not far out Jester, it was actually June 1966. Elizabeth Needler was the sitter. Mr Keay gave a talk on portrait painting to the Lit and illustrated it by painting Liz.
Also, in the mags of June 1964 AND 1965 there is what looks to my untutored eye a montage of the life of the school by a certain D MacDougall. I have no idea of the techniques involved - it could be paper cutting, printing ..... I await elucidation!

Harry Keay

I recall that illustration but it must have been in the early 60s. The girl’s older brother was in my year, S1 in 1958, so she would have been in year 1 in 1961-62 or so. Painting a portrait of one of the first year pupils seemed to be a bit of a tradition, with Harry. I have a watercolour portrait of Gwen from S1 in 1960. It is done in sepia “monochrome” so the black and white reproduction in the magazine might not be too far from the original.

Can't think what happened there. I posted the bit about Gwen's portrait at around 7:30 pm last night. Doesn't make much sense my post coming after Sandra's explanation.

Thank you David. I'm in awe at your ability to do that! I don't know why it was in two magazines tho. Sheila autographed my copy from 1965 on that page!! And Liz Needler's portrait is definitely in the 1966 magazine - it is sitting open beside me as I type. As well as the photos (one action one and the finished portrait) there is a mention of that meeting of the Lit on the society's pages - secretary Iain W Taylor.

Sorry, David. Didn't realise you were posting at the same time as I was! I understand the crossed posts now.

Going back two posts, Sandra, it’s nothing special, we are all blessed with some skill or other. Are you not an expert at tapestry or lace or tapestry and lace? Look at the wordsmiths on the Forum. To me these are very special skills.

Whatever happened to Papa Giorgio, George Keiller. Last I heard from him he was in Australia. How are you George?

George lives on the NSW coast. He took a cycling holiday through Europe about 120 years ago - thence to the UK to visit his folks - and then on the North America. We had dinner together in Montreal. He was in good shape, having cycled thousands of miles in the previous couple of months. During my visits to Australia en route to work in the Phillipines in the early 2000 s - I called him a couple of times but never managed to get him at home.
As Ronald George Smith, I attended the Morgan Academy from 1947 to 1960. My sister Vivian (two years my senior) and brother Euan (two years my junior) also attended the Morgan.

I clearly made an error in my past posting - I meant 10 years ago - not 120 years ago. But on reflection, it must have been closer to 20 years ago - time has a way of passing so rapidly that two decades can seem like one!

He was always a very competetive racing cyclist when he was at school Ron. Used to shave his legs to cut down wind resistance. We were great friends. He played a mean French Horn too.We lived near each other in Fintry.

It may be a tactless question, Ronald, but George Keiller "took a cycling holiday through Europe about 120 (10) years ago - thence to the UK to visit his folks." Surely his folks must have been the best part of at least 90 years plus old. What a fantastic adventure for all concerned.
