School Song

Jail the teachers every one.......(popular pupil version, early to mid 1950s)

The School Song

O'er the Bridge that spans the River,
Moving slowly to the sea,
Looks "The Morgan", now as ever,
Fairest school in all Dundee.
And as day by day we view her,
Standing stately on the hill,
Proudly pay we homage to her,
Gladly sing with right good will.

Chorus

Hail "The Morgan" stately, splendid,
Hail the teachers, every one !
Cheer we every goal defended
Every hit and every run !
We would strive with every lesson,
As we strive when at our play,
Learn with every passing session,
"Who would rule, must first obey."

O'er the Bridge that spans the River,
Soon we pass away alone,
Leaving comrades keen and clever,
For the lure of the unknown.
But, though much or mean our treasure,
Though our fame be great or ill,
We shall still recall with pleasure,
Our dear "Morgan" on the hill.

Chorus-

Though the Bridge that spans the River,
Take us far from home and friend,
Hide them for our sight forever,
Till the "long trail" has an end,
There's a beacon that will light us,
Lone on land, or far at sea,
There's a name that will unite us,
'Tis "The Morgan" of Dundee.

Chorus -

Words by Rev George Blair D.D. Music by A.C. Bewick

It was a bit "Deutschland Uber Alles" was it not?

I agree -- and would go so far as to say really good song. I sang all the verses to my wife (who is Peruvian) as we drove round the Morgan triangle in September 2010. "Hail the Morgan and Hail the teachers!" The school did me proud during the 13 years I was there. I decidedly benefited more from my Morgan education than from my doctoral studies at l’université de Montréal. That's not to say I enjoyed every minute at school or even liked all the teachers. But the song captures very well my memories and sentiments about the school. I’d be very surprised if a majority of FPs did not feel the same. Remember the end-of-year gathering in the big hall where we all sang our lungs out (yes, with emphasis on the 'jail', the day the 'seven-weekies' began?
As Ronald George Smith, I attended the Morgan Academy from 1947 to 1960. My sister Vivian (two years my senior) and brother Euan (two years my junior) also attended the Morgan.

I like the bit about popular pupil version in the 50s. I sang that in the 60s and my mum sang it in the 30s (and told me about it long before I went to the Morgan)

In my memory, the school song was more than the words and the tune though these are undoubtedly important. The school song was much more ….. it was the assembly in the big hall immediately prior to the end-of-term and the sweet promise of the seven-weeks-holiday. Exams over and results known, the academic year behind us and the anticipated step closer to the final goal of “finishing school”. Heightened expectation of getting out into the sun every morning – sunshine that had tempted us since spring, through the mullioned stone windows and drawn the inevitable “Pay attention!” from Mr. Hutchison (Bunny) whose room faced south. The excitement of the last day, ironed white shirts, combed hair, neatly tied; filing onto the stage and taking our seats on the benches in class groups. The Rector’s almost pleasant demeanor as if he were looking forward to the seven weeks as much as we were. The old Aberdonian minister whose final speech brought nudges and smirks as he talked about “tractors and motor cars” in his unusual accent. And then the rustling and coughing as we stood up for the finale – the school song, dust motes dancing in the rays piercing the glass roof, the warmth, the anticipation of freedom. The piano playing the introduction and then giving it all we had …. That was the school song for me then! Maybe it still is for some today!

...... and Ian? (Killer) McIntosh drumming in the last verse - still raises the hairs on the back of my neck.

Ron

That must be the most eloquent posting for a long time, if not ever.

Thanks David! As yoiu can see, I still have strong sentiments about the Morgan and my thirteen years there. Not that everything was to my liking by any manner of means, but inevitably it was a very profound experience and it was, undoubtedly, one of the great influences on my development and subsequent career. That's why I started the forum on "How well the Morgan has served me". It would appear, given the few postings on that forum, that my positive memories are not shared, at least to the same extent, by many others. I must say that this has been a surprise to me.
