Round a full circle now. Back to Jester and Dave D.'s earlier comments, I'll be there and Levi Stubbs.

I hope someone can help me ............... I am "shopping" for a photograph of a particular section of the Overgate. The building from Greenhills to Saxone Shoes which included the closie for 77 Overgate. Has anyone come across such a photograph? I have looked at hundreds of images online but so far none of them have hit the mark   . Obviously, or I would have stopped looking

Dave, in the book "Old Dundee, Streets and Wynds" I have a photo taken in 1938 looking west along the Overgate. You can see Greenhills sign, and just a bit further along a "K Shoes" sign.

If you think that might be what you are looking for, send me a private message and I can try scanning the picture and emailing it to you.

...........and I've just noticed that the very next photo in that book is of the same part of the Overgate, from a slightly different angle, taken in 1963.
Maybe this isn't strictly about shopping, but two shops in the old Overgate have had a mention!

Kate, thanks for your help. I have that Old Dundee booklet, Streets and Wynds - one of the series by Jack Herd. These two photographs are the best I have found so far. How I wish someone could have taken a photograph from directly across the street   .

David, I have tracked down two images, one looks east along Overgate with Greenhills sign prominent, but the shopfront is much foreshortened. The second seems to have been taken from the roof or upper floors of the Imperial Hotel looking along the north side of Overgate from Barrack Street to Lindsay Street. Although the fascia sign is not very clear, judging by the relationship to the pawnbroker sign, the ornate string courses and from the OS map, Greenhill's appears to be the unit immediately west of "Ingram's". I do not have your e-address so if you e-mail me (e-address is on the merchandise page) I can forward these images. Another thought, I am sure Andy Greenhill who started senior school in 1960 is related, perhaps if Thelma has his contact details your enquiry could be passed on to him. Cheers

Dave, your query about the old Overgate reminds me of the wartime belief that Dundee wasn't bombed much because Hitler's granny lived up the Overgate!

I met her once. She was an old wifie in a black dress, her hair tied back into a bun, and drank a lot of whisky. She lived up a close next to the Saturday market.

Kate, it is a well known fact that Dundee was not bombed because Hitler regarded Dundee as the "Holy City" . That was because they kicked Churchill out for "Neddy" Scrimegour in the general Election in the early 1920's.
