It is here and it is not currently raining in St. Andrews. Usual mix of bargain sales stalls and funrides.

hi CBY 1955 The " market always occurs at this time of year outside what you will know as term time now seminar time. It is actually a family thing and the best age range to go is when you are eight to twelve. Of course the Victoria cafe is still across from the union and open.

Hi Ian Not starting a new thread . I wonder how many Morganites have graduated here since I started in 1982. You will get a surprise I am in the Bute just now. It is not the Bute Medical anymore. As you come into St.Andrews the new building on the North Haugh nearest the University roundabout is the Medical building now.

Yes I know about the new medical school. We are visiting it as part of the re-union and Lord Naren Patel who was a registrar with us at DRI in the sixties is attending our dinner
PS . no need for new thread as all relevant to St Andrews. Ha Ha.

Ian, Naren Patel is a GENTLEMAN. He delivered my son, Iain, around 1pm, 18 August 1978. (Time varies according to who is telling the story.)
Husband, Peter, maintains that Naren told him to finish his lunch at the Glencoe Hotel because the delivery wouldn't be until mid way through afternoon surgery.
To keep to the thread - Iain was born around the time of the Lammas Market.
Peter was in St Andrews last week on an Organ Course just as Lammas Market was kicking off.

The only time I was at the Lammas Market was in 1960, when my summer job was in the West Park Hotel (later bought by the University and knocked down, and the new Union was built on the site). Do they still auction off sites on the streets for the various fairground rides?

The auction of sites- I think it is a mix now . One year recently the bargain stall holders outbid the showmans guild and the rides were at either end of South street. Caused quite a stir if I mind.

I'm fairly certain I went to the first Lammas Fair to open after the war had just ended - the men had still not returned form overseas. My mother took my older sister, my younger brother and I - and kept up the tradition for several years. I can't remember a thing about it althopugh St. Andrews impressed me greatly. At the time, I thought it was called Sin Tandrews!
As Ronald George Smith, I attended the Morgan Academy from 1947 to 1960. My sister Vivian (two years my senior) and brother Euan (two years my junior) also attended the Morgan.

What a fine memory you have, Kate. It would be great to hear of your experiences during your summer job in the West Park Hotel, St Andrews. I can`t even remember the hotel, but there again, I`m only a youngster!
