As a consumer in this large consumer`s market, how am I expected to answer those questions, David? Continue to be pedantic but continue to practice what you have learned at your meeting and use plain English. In so many documents, don`t ask me to name any, ambiguity is clearly seen. Here it is a little more difficult.

I mind, one time, picking tatties at Glamis castle, the front of which was in full view while we worked. It was always quite hard work but the money was riches. I was able to buy a bike (s/h of course). I sure learned some 'songs' which I can still repeat today, but only inwardly! "in the shade of an old apple tree...." "On board the good ship Venus...." I can also remember "Zadok the priest" which we all sang (in the choir) at the exact time that the Crown was placed on the Queen's head. It was a very musical time.

Tatties and . . .

Postby Jester » Thu May 05, 2011 4:52 pm

Now, haud on a meenit, Ken. Shairly 'mince' and ' tatties' is okay, is they no'? Onywey, David tells us his heid's mince. Ah thocht ABODY'S heid in David's depairtment wiz full o' mince.

Back to sobriety. Our first tatties' dinnertime was at Glamis primary school, where big tubs full of water were available in the playground for washing our hands. Washing? It was jest guid clean stoor, God's earth. Fa' needs tae waash? Anyway, this was the first time I'd ever tasted Macaroni & Cheese, or to be precise, the first time I and everyone else started pelting it at each other as it was disgusting! Fortunately, there were 'seconds' of the semolina and jam sauce. (Actually, I've written about this before on the Forum... the last one, perchance? Or is it still lurking aroundt here under some obscure heading?)

Glad it was Macaroni & Cheese that you wasted and not Skirlie!
As Ronald George Smith, I attended the Morgan Academy from 1947 to 1960. My sister Vivian (two years my senior) and brother Euan (two years my junior) also attended the Morgan.

Skirlie was a staple when camping with the Scouts. The butcher in the Co-op in Cupar sells beef olives with oatmeal inside. He says it is not white pudding but it tastes similar, and is a reminder of days gone by.
