Thanks for you tube links in particular the OU one. Tonight I shall watch at 2030 hrs on BBC Alba the 1980s history programme. The school has not be seen yet but it is interesting to see old news footage in the light of the passage of time. Difficult to remember that VCRs were high tech and mobile phones the size of transistor radios. in the 1980s. Does anyone recall them the trannies I mean ?.

Music and laughter

Postby Jester » Sun Feb 26, 2012 6:34 pm

Yes,Roslin, my first 'trannie' was (is) a Philips, burgundy and cream with chrome grill. Alas, I took it along to The Mikies when teaching and it was rather badly treated by the ruffians, so it has lost its original good looks - would likely be worth a bob or two otherwise.

Week before last, I was at a Woman's Guild meeting where the subject of an illustrated talk was Laurel & Hardy. Great! Then, at the same church, Saturday was "Coffee at the Barbers", with a local barbershop quartet. Tip-top! Being stuck at the back of a packed hall, I was worried in case some old biddies would start cackling away during the performance (I have suffered this elsewhere), but no, everyone was on their best behaviour.

I'm having a problem with this forum. Paragraphs jump up to join the previous one, and words stick together despite being typed properly. Finger crossed for this one to work properly.

No problem, jester, words and paragraphs formed perfectly. And content as interesting as usual.

Re: The Artist

[quote="Jester"][color=#000080]Sometimes when a new film is well hyped, it turns out a disappoinment. Not so with THE ARTIST... it deserves all the praise that's been thrown at it.

Congratulations on your superior critical capacities! Looks like others agree with your insight!

David, thanks for
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=_lBgVJSyqwY An Open University clip featuring Bill Dow.
Very interesting indeed. I remember reading an article on Bill Dow's theory of how the Tay Rail Bridge fell in The Scots Magazine some years ago. The Open University clip is really intriguing and Bill Dow handles it very well. Makes me proud to have had him as one of my science teachers. I can still see him in his brown lab coat with holes in it - probably the result of acid splashes or other minor accidents in the lab on the top floor.

I'm about to watch "We Need to Talk about Kevin" which has just become available on our TV on Filmflex. I read the book, and it wasn't an easy read, but the film has been highly praised, so we'll give it a go. At £3.99 it's cheaper than if we had both gone to the cinema!

How do you know we don't sit at home munching popcorn and eating sweeties, David? Not to mention a choc-ice out of the freezer?

Luxury

Postby Jester » Thu Mar 01, 2012 2:29 pm

Ah, but did you know it is now possible to visit a London Odeon cinema and be served with a complete meal as you loll in a sinky-comfortable easy chair? At a mere £70 for the meal, plus £18 cinema ticket, it's not jest a meal... it's a steal !!!

Wow, Jester, which London Odeon cinema is that? Back in 1967 I went to work for Rank Org and first at the Edinburgh Odeon then at the State in Kilburn, London. In those days you could get a hotdog for about 1/6 and your ticket cost about 4/- ......... ah, those were the days

Cineworld now charge £5.13 (Senior if booked online), and about £3.75 for a standard hot-dog

Next time we are back in Dundee, I'll have to do the old trick - I buy the senior's ticket online, go in, buy two hotdogs and two drinks, get two nice seats in the back row, leave the hotdogs and the drinks on the seats and go and let the wife in the back door emergency exit.
